On Friday we went to GISS for a morning of activities with grade 5s from Fernwood and Pender.  Students were asked to design a way to conserve water at their school and then build a model of it.  There were lots of creative ideas.  This Tuesday the volleyball players are going to SSE for a tournament from 11:30 until 2:00.  It should be fun.  On Thursday I will be having "Potato Day" with the class.  We'll bake some potatoes and serve them with cheese and sour cream for a snack after recess.  Yumm!  Girls and boys basketball practice starts this week.

Subjects

Math:  We continue practicing multiplication facts and learning some strategies for multiplying numbers.  I'm encouraging each student to try several strategies and then pick the best one for their use in solving questions.
Reading:   We're finished reading Charlotte's Web and we'll be doing some follow-up activities for the next few days.  Students will be choosing a project to do with the book.
Writing:   Students have been writing explanatory pieces such as recipes and autobiographies.  I'm using this format to teach them how to write paragraphs.  We'll be looking at research writing next.
Tech: We continue with Hour of Code and Lego robotics.  I am also showing the students how to create a blog.  The blog will be available to only those who are sent the link. Students will share their blog with you when they have organized it and put in a few entries.
Science: We are now studying the classification of animals.
Art:   This week we're beginning to investigate colour and the colour wheel..
PE:    In PE we will be starting to do some basketball skills and continue with fitness training once a week.     We will also do some square dancing.
