What a great week we had!  The salmon release was fun and we had a great time at Blackburn Lake.  The visit to Pender Island was fabulous!  All the students had a great time with the other grade 4/5 class who were friendly and gracious hosts.  Everyone loved using the wheelchairs and got a great appreciation of what it would be like if you had to use one permanently.   Thanks to the parents that came to Pender with us and the great behaviour and enthusiasm we had from our students.

Michelle Spencer and I have started working together on Tuesdays with the class on a theme we call, "Growing Up".  It's about investigating the changes that happen as young people grow up and looks at physical, emotion, mental, and social changes that students experience.  We will discuss issues such as how the brain changes as you get older; emotional needs, the importance of friends, and changes to the body including puberty.  We plan to have a separate session for boys and girls at the end to talk separately about physical changes during puberty.

Subjects

Math:   This week we are beginning to work with division.   Expect some daily math practice to be coming home.
"Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:   This week we choose the parts for Peter Pan and begin the serious study of the play.  If your child has a sizeable role in the play they should be bringing the script home to practice reading.
Writing:  We have just started the draft of the fictional story the students are creating.  It's been a long process to get the ideas started.
Tech:   We continue with code online and with paired students working with Gandalf our Sphero buddy.
Science:  We continue to look at Work and energy in science.
Art:  We continue doing some crafts such as knot tying and macrame plus some line drawing skills.
PE:  Students are learning to jive and we'll be starting a unit on gymnastics this week.
French:  Students continue learning simple French words and greetings. They will be learning days of the week, months, and the weather.
