April 4, 2016

Welcome back from spring break.  I hope everyone had an interesting and rejuvenating break.   Thanks to the parents who were able to come out to see our Pioneer Day presentation.  We hope you enjoyed it and learned a bit of what we were doing in class for social studies.  I always enjoy having the students perform in front of others. I'm excited about all the activities and learning we'll be doing in the next 3 months--imagine the end of the year is coming so soon!  This week we will be starting coding for computers using a program called "Hour of Code".  It's a great way for students to begin to learn code on the computers and I know they will enjoy it very much.  Code is about learning logic and algorithms in order to instruct the computer to act.

Subjects

Math:   We continue working with measurement and area.  I will be giving students a home assignment to measure their room so they can create a scale drawing of it at school.
"Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:   We start looking at scripts this week and begin the process of choosing a play for the end of year performance.  We will also be doing some novel reading.
Writing:  For the next couple of weeks our focus in writing will be on creating a character.  I will be showing the class how to create a fictional character and then write about their person.
Tech:   Students are having a great time working with iStop Motion on the iPads.   We will also be investigating code.
Science:  In science we will be starting a unit on machines and work.  It will be a fun unit with lots of hands-on activities.
Art:  We will be involved doing some crafts such as knot tying and macrame.
PE:  I will be working with students on developing some gymnastic skills and teach them to jive in dance.
French:  Students continue learning simple French words and greetings. They will be learning days of the week, months, and the weather.

You are welcome to phone me or email me if you have  any questions about what is happening in class.  250-537-4962  or jlightfoot@sd64.bc.ca
