This Week
What
a fabulous camping trip last week!
Thanks to all the parents who accompanied the class and helped us have a
great time: Michela, Luke, Al, April, Dawn, Tina, Andy, Mike, John, Dave,
Karin, Gail, Aurora, and Robert. It’s
really amazing how many things you can do in 30 hours! Please view the slide show next to this post
and send me any great pictures you took of the trip.
It was nice to meet with parents for an
interview on Wednesday. It gave me a
chance to hear your thoughts about your child and how I can help make their year
successful. If you
haven’t had a chance to meet with me please give me a call and we can arrange a
time to chat. As usual, if you have any
concerns, questions or suggestions please contact me at school or home.
Subjects
Math: We are continuing
to study patterns both with numbers and symbols. Students really enjoyed solving a difficult
pattern I gave them on Thursday—they spent nearly 30 minutes trying to solve
it, especially when I told them it was really difficult and challenging. We will also begin looking at number
coordinates this week.
Reading: Students
are working in a leveled series called Reading A to Z. Using a fluency assessment, I have guided
students into their appropriate reading level.
Each level has 12-15 stories that students read and do some related
activities. Daily I interview students and talk about reading fluency and
comprehension. We are also continue to look
at basics of language including syllabication, alphabetization, and building
word power.
Writing:
Students are nearly finished their adventure story. Students are learning
to create webs for research—I have asked them to begin by making a web of our
trip to Horne Lake. We will be focusing
on sentences structure for the next few weeks. Students continue to use their
nature journals outside.
Art: Students are doing some interesting pattern
activities and I’m teaching them how to do 3-D and vanishing point lettering.
PE: We are focusing
on creative games—students will be asked to create their own games to
demonstrate to the class. Tuesdays is
dance day.
