This week we will be doing a lot of writing in the computer lab with a focus on practicing keyboarding and writing solid paragraphs.  We will also be doing coding in the lab which the students are really enjoying.  Students will be doing some first nations art with Quentin on Tuesday.  He usually tells a story and students draw an animal.

Below is a link to a folder of class photos I'm taking and updating throughout the year.

Subjects

Math:  We continue to study number theory which includes place value, comparing, and reading numbers.   "Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:   With the classroom reading group we are working on Word Sorts weekly which is a spelling program the focuses on spelling patterns.  We have just started a group guided novel study with a book called, "Owls in the Family".  It's a classic outdoor story with lots of humour and interesting characters.  We'll also be studying owls as part of the reading unit.
Several students receive reading support outside the classroom for an hour 3 days a week.  I've starting different spelling groups and teaching students spelling and word patterns throughout the year.
Writing:   Students are now practicing keyboarding online daily so that they can type their written work efficiently.  It would be great if they also practiced at home on occasion.  Students have completed their first Lab writing on the topic, "About Me."  They are using Google apps to create their written work and they can share it with others online.
Tech: We've started coding using coding.org.  Students are learning to use GAFE (Google apps for education.)  This involves word processing, tables, and powerpoints.  I plan to teach them lessons in these areas for the next few weeks.
Social Studies:  We continue with our focus on mapping and we'll be studying B.C.
Art:   We continue to explore patterns but we will also be starting to look at specific drawing skills using pencils. We're using a great online art tutoring app called how2drawanimals.  Students are loving it!
PE:    In PE we are focusing basic coordination and movement skills for the first few weeks.  In dance we have learned the Virginia Reel and we will be doing some other square dance songs.
French:   In French students are learning greetings, numbers, and days of the week.
