Sept. 30, 2019

What a great camping trip to Parksville!  We had a wonderful time at the playground, mini-golf, making supper, playing at the campsite and swimming in Nanaimo.  Thanks to Gabriel, Dawn, Mauryah, Andrew, Kristin, Brian, and Vanessa for coming on the trip and making it a great experience.

On Wednesday we will be going to Cusheon Cove with the Nature Conservancy to participate in outdoor stations related to local history and First Nations.  Parents are welcome to come with us.  We will be leaving the school at about 9:20 and returning just after 2:15.

Below is a link to a folder of class photos I'm taking.

Subjects

Math:  We continue learning about patterns.  I'm also doing math word problems with the class daily to help with understanding concepts and applying what they know.   "Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:   Students are now engaged in a reading program called  Reading A to Z.
They read daily at their "just right" reading levels while I work on them with vocabulary and reading fluency.  I'm starting different spelling groups and teaching students spelling and word patterns throughout the year.
Writing:   My focus continues to be on sentences--what they are, how to identify them, and how to write them correctly.  We'll also look at using descriptive words in sentences.
Tech: As soon as we can get all student Logins and Google passwords we'll be starting to look at applications and computer skills including typing online.  I hope this starts soon!
Science: We have looked at the water cycle and will begin a study on trees.
Art:   We are focused on points and lines and basic art skills.
PE:    In PE we are focusing basic coordination and movement skills for the first few weeks.  In folk dance we are learning the hora, hula, and a Serbian dance.
French:   In French students are learning basic greetings and simple phrases.
