April 15, 2018

After reading several scripts and discussing the pros and cons of each one, the class has chosen "The Wizard of Oz" as the play we will be performing for our year-end play.  This week we will be reviewing the play and students will be choosing roles they wish to act in the play.  This may take several days to sort out as we work through the play.  For the lead roles I always double cast the main parts so that more students have an opportunity to have major roles.  I will be needing help from parents with set design and costumes so if you are interested let me know.  I'll let you know when we are ready to start working on those areas for the play.

Subjects

Math:  We continue to focus on geometry. Students are learning about lines and geometric shapes.
"Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:    We continue "word sorts"  twice a week with spelling quizzes on the words every two weeks.   Students are working on story boards for a fable, myth or legends.  We continue to work on drama often in class and will now be focusing on our end of the year play, "The Wizard of Oz".
Writing:   Our focus on writing is poetry because April is poetry month!
Science:  Students have been working on the online coding program "Scratch".  They have been having a great time learning creative ways to code and make drawing programs, animations, and some simple games.  They are able to access Scratch at home if they wish.   Tomorrow students will begin working on Lego Mindstorms which will be an exciting activity for them.  They will learn to build and program a quite complex robot that can do a multiple of activities.  Students will work as partners to build, design, and program the robots.
Social Studies: We have nearly finished making the models for Barkerville and will set them up for display soon.  I'll let you know when you can come see them at school.
Art:  We are looking at drawing 3-d objects in art.
PE:    This term we will focus on badminton and gymnastics.    In dance, we continue with jiving and Tanya (our secretary) is going to teach the class a couple of tango lessons.  Should be fun.!
French:   In French we will be learning about months, seasons, the weather, as well as beginning to have some short dialogues and conversations.  Students will be using an app called Duolingo in French time for basic language practice.
