Feb. 5, 2018

This week we have Math gym set up in the gym for students.  There are 14 stations with math activities for students to engage in: puzzles, manipulatives, and games.  Parents are invited to come on Thursday evening to try some of the activities with their children.  I'll be there, it's lots of fun!
We are nearly finished our part in painting the school mural.  I've posted a picture on the right of the blog of what the sun will look like when it's finished.
The delivery of the salmon was delayed so tomorrow we will be receiving coho salmon eggs that we usually release near earth day at Fulford creek.

Subjects

Math:   We continue studying multiplication and division together as a concept.  I am beginning this week with 1 digit multiplication and showing a couple of strategies to solve problems.
"Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:    We continue "word sorts"  twice a week to help with spelling and word patterns.  We also continue with the two novels, "My Side of the Mountain" and "Misty of Chincoteague".  Last week students built fires using flint and steel.  Groups were all successful, but it was a challenge and lots of fun!  On Thursdays we focus on Reader's Theatre and drama activities.
Writing:    I hope to finish the short story this week and teach students how to use slides in google apps to make a presentation.  When they are finished they can share their slide show with you.
Science:  We'll finish Course 2 in hour of code this week and students will start a project in groups with coding using lego robotics.   We are also using a coding program with a robot called Sphero and the students are having fun with it.
Social Studies: The Gold Rush of 1858 continues with our students are in the Fraser Canyon panning for gold.  Soon they will be traveling up the Cariboo road towards Barkerville.
Art:  Our theme is colour --learning about the colour wheel and mixing colours in different mediums.
PE:    Most of our focus is on basketball in PE.    In dance, we have started jiving.
French:   In French we will be learning about months and seasons, as well as beginning to have some short dialogues and conversations.
