Jan.8, 2018

Welcome to the new year, 2018!  I hope everyone had a great holiday break with lots of fun family time.  We're back to re-starting routines after a two week break.  Students will be bringing home some math practice like we started before Christmas.  Now we will be focusing on practicing math times tables.  Continue to encourage your child to read daily for 20-30 minutes.

Subjects

Math:   We start the new year learning Roman Numerals and also practice some number rounding.  Next we'll be studying multiplication and learning patterns and strategies to help students with mastery of the concepts.
"Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:    We continue to use "word sorts"  two days a week.  I will be dividing students into two reading groups to focus on two novels, "My Side of the Mountain" and "Misty of Chincoteague".  On Thursdays we will focus on Reader's Theatre and drama activities.
Writing:    Students are back to working with paragraph development with short paragraphs on assigned topics.
Science:  In science we'll be focusing on tech regarding coding and I will be starting to work with some robotics.
Social Studies: This term the theme for social studies is the gold rush in B.C. history.  Students will be choosing a character in 1858 to help them learn about the gold rush and will be keeping diaries to show how the history unfolded.
Art:  Our theme will be looking at colour and patterns.
PE:    In PE we will be beginning to focus on basketball skills at least twice a week.  Basketball teams will be starting soon.   In dance, I will be starting to teach the students how to jive.
French:   In French we will be learning about months and seasons, as well as beginning to have some short dialogues and conversations.
