This Week

This Week
Monday afternoon the class is going to see a performance at Artspring.  This week I’ll be checking the forests for mushrooms.  When there is enough fruiting we’ll go for a hike and gather some samples. We’ll be identifying fungi and doing some spore prints.   I’ll let you know when we are going as you might like to join us. Check out some of the links I've created on the right.  I'll be adding more soon!
Math: This week we are beginning to look at number theory which involves place value and understanding number meaning.
Reading: The school now has Reading Workshops Monday to Wednesday.  Students are grouped together to meet their reading needs.  In our group this week we are focusing on using the dictionary, looking at word meanings, and developing individual reading skills.
Writing:  Students are learning to use webs and idea organizers to develop ideas on a topic.  They will then research the topic and write a draft about the topic.  We still continue to focus on sentences: punctuation, grammar, spelling, and making sentences interesting.
Science. Students are learning about different parts of trees. They will work in partners to design a diagram that explains the parts of trees and their functions.  We continue to investigate the hemispheres of the brain and will do an interesting experiment about left/right brain differences.
Art: We begin to look at lettering: block, bubble, and 3D.
Recorder: Students have learned and practiced C and D.  I have given them blank music sheets so that they can begin to compose their own music.  They are incredibly focused and seem to really enjoy it!  Students are welcome to take their recorder and music home to practice.
PE: We continue with jogging and fitness on Monday; Tuesday is dance (we’ve started jiving); and Wednesday and Thursday are game days.
