This Week
It’s the week before Hallowe’en and the class will be busy decorating the classroom to create an eerie, spooky place.  Some students have asked about bringing a laptop to school to do their school work.  I have always been open to this and encourage students to use technology to do their work. 6 or 7 students already bring their laptops or iPad to school to research, keep journals, write stories, and work on projects.  I see this as an effective way to do work and an opportunity for students to be more engaged in their learning.  A fungi walk with likely occur next week—I’ll let you know the day ASAP.
Math: We continue looking at place value and understanding number meaning.  I’m teaching some students who are interested base 5.
Reading: The school now has Reading Workshops Monday to Wednesday.  Students are grouped together to meet their reading needs.  Our group continues to focus on using the dictionary, looking at word meanings, and developing individual reading skills.
Writing:  Students are writing about an animal as a follow up with our look at making paragraphs and organizing ideas.  We will also do some Hallowe’en writing.
Science. Students are working in partners to design a diagram that explains the parts of trees and their functions.  We continue to investigate the hemispheres of the brain and will do an interesting experiment about left/right brain differences.
Art: The focus is Hallowe’en and decorating the classroom.
Recorder: Students are continuing to practice notes A to D and are beginning to compose their own music.   Students are welcome to take their recorder and music home to practice.
PE: We continue with jogging and fitness on Monday; Tuesday is dance (we’ve started jiving); and Wednesday and Thursday are game days.
