May 1,  2017

This Thursday we have a class sleepover!  We'll be having pizza for supper and students will be sleeping either in the gym or the library. Plus there are lots of activities happening after school and in the evening.  I'll send home a detailed note on Tuesday about the event.  It should be lots of fun.  Students have chosen parts for the play Robin Hood  and we will begin practicing in earnest this week.  We will be reading the script daily and students will be asked to take the scripts home to practice and learn their part.  In a few weeks we will begin thinking about designing the set for the play and I'll be asking parents to come and help with the design.  The dates for the play are tentatively set for June 7 or 8 but may be changed to the following week if we need more time for practice.

Subjects

Math:   We continue our unit on fractions.
"Math is the science of patterns."
Reading:   We continue with the word sorts twice a week.   Students will be sharing the recordings they have done reading a story.  We will also be reading Robin Hood daily.
Writing:    We continue writing opinion pieces for 2 days a week and on Wednesdays we are working on the Alter Ego writing.  I hope to start to teaching the class how to make websites this week.
Science: We are still waiting to test piloting some science kits from the school School District.
Tech:  Teams are beginning to make their robotic animals for their bee habitat and are having a great time.  The Lego Jr. robotics is a great team effort and is quite challenging.
Art:  We finish off the woodworking project this week and will design butterflies.
PE:  Students continue to do weekly fitness stations.  We will practice a couple of more sessions with square dancing and then move on to dances from the 50s and 60s.
French:   Students did a great job labelling the parts of the body on an outline--very colourful and creative!
